V5C

Road-registered quads

A quad that is registered for road use has a V5C logbook, a number plate and its own registration number. Road-legal quads are usually type-approved as L-category vehicles (for example L7e heavy quadricycles). Please have the original V5C in your name. It doesn't matter whether the quad is currently taxed or has a current MOT: we collect it on a trailer.

Agri

Agricultural registration

Many farm ATVs are registered with the DVLA for agricultural use, which comes with its own tax class and limits on how the quad can be used on the road. If your quad has a V5C showing an agricultural or light agricultural tax class, have it ready. If it was used on the farm but never registered, that's fine too: see off-road quads below.

Off-road

Off-road only quads

Plenty of quads, especially sport quads, kids' quads and farm ATVs used only on private land, are never registered and have no V5C. We buy them. We'll need proof that you own the quad, such as the original purchase invoice or a receipt from the person you bought it from, and the frame (VIN) number so we can carry out ownership and theft checks.

Security

CESAR, datatags and immobilisers

Quads are a target for thieves, so many are protected by the CESAR marking scheme, datatags, immobilisers or trackers. Tell us what's fitted and pass on any registration documents for them, so the next owner can update the details. If a quad is security-marked to a previous owner, that's fine, but we'll check it.

Hours

Hours, miles and condition

Utility ATVs often record engine hours rather than miles. Either is fine. The things that matter most are general condition, the tyres, bearings, CV boots, brakes and whether it has been rolled or flooded. Winches, racks, tow hitches, ploughs and sprayers are welcome, and should be listed in the notes.

Business

Farms, estates and businesses

We buy from farms, estates, equestrian yards, hire fleets and businesses as well as private owners. Tell us whether the quad is VAT-qualifying when you ask for a valuation, and we'll provide the paperwork your accounts need. Selling several at once? Tell us how many and where they are.

Your checklist

  • The V5C in your name, if the quad is road or agriculturally registered
  • If there is no V5C: the purchase invoice or receipt, and the frame (VIN) number
  • Photo ID: passport or driving licence
  • All keys, and the immobiliser fob or code if one is fitted
  • Any CESAR, datatag or tracker paperwork
  • If there is finance: the settlement figure from your lender

This page is a plain-English guide, not legal advice. Rules on registering and using quads on the road vary by vehicle and use: we'll tell you exactly what applies to yours.

Quad paperwork FAQs

I have no paperwork at all for my quad. Can I sell it?

Tell us the situation. We'll need to be satisfied that you own it, and we'll run ownership and theft checks on the frame number before we buy.

Can I ride the quad to you?

There's no need. We collect on a trailer or truck, free within the UK.

My quad is registered but has no MOT. Is that OK?

Yes. We collect it, so it does not need an MOT or tax.

The quad is security-marked to someone else. What now?

Tell us. If you bought it from them, the receipt is usually enough, and we'll check it on the register.

Do I need to tell the DVLA when I sell?

If the quad has a V5C, yes. We'll go through the keeper change with you on the day.
